Jesus, the stream of living waters Preaching Outline on Proverbs 21:1-2 - "Like streams of water, so is the king's heart in the hand of the Lord; to all that he desires does he incline it. Every way of man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord searches the heart." Introduction With each passing day, people far from the Lord feel an emptiness in their being. This emptiness is the thirst of the soul, because the human heart longs for its Creator. This thirst can only be quenched in the Stream of Living Waters, which is the Lord Jesus. The context of this verse reveals that God has full control over the hearts of the leaders (represented by the "king"), just as he directs the course of the waters. The text also contrasts human self-sufficiency ("the way of man seems right in his own eyes") with divine omniscience ("the Lord searches the hearts"). To illustrate this teaching, we will use biblical symbols: Waters → They represent life, the Holy Spirit and the Word of God (John 7:38-39). Heart of the king → Speaks of God's sovereignty over the powerful and over the human heart. Way of man → Symbolizes the illusion of self-sufficiency. Development "Like streams of water..." When Jesus gave His life on Calvary, a fountain was opened - the Fountain of Living Waters (Zechariah 13:1). The Lord's will is to quench the thirst of man's soul, giving him true peace and joy, which are only found when we draw near to Him, the inexhaustible Stream (John 4:14). "...such is the heart of the king..." Jesus is the King of kings (Revelation 19:16), who loved us and loves us with all his heart. His heart is a fountain of grace - which frees, comforts and quenches the deepest thirst of the soul. "...into the hands of the Lord; to all that he wills he bends him..." For this Fountain to be opened, Jesus submitted to the divine plan. He gave himself into the Father's hands, fulfilling God's sovereign will (Matthew 26:39; Isaiah 53:10). Thus, he won for us the right to Eternal Life. "Every way of man is right in his own eyes..." In an attempt to quench his thirst, man travels down deceitful paths. He thinks that all rivers lead to God, but there is only one true stream (John 14:6). Trusting in your own wisdom is like drinking from salt water - the more you drink, the greater your thirst (Jeremiah 2:13). "...but the Lord searches the heart." When man surrenders to Jesus, the Holy Spirit begins to guide him to the Source of Salvation. We no longer walk by sight, but by divine direction (2 Corinthians 5:7). God searches the heart and reveals the true thirst - only He can give the Living Water that flows into Eternal Life (John 4:14). Conclusion Jesus shed his blood on the cross so that our thirst might be quenched today. He is the Way (not one of many), the Source of Pure Water (not a contaminated river) and Eternal Life (not a passing joy). If you've been quenching your thirst in dry rivers (pleasures, riches, empty religions), turn to Jesus. If your heart is thirsty, he says: "Whoever is thirsty, let him come to me and drink" (John 7:37). Only in the Stream of Living Waters can the soul find rest.
