In God’s word – Proverbs 4:13

In the word of God is life

Preaching Outline on Proverbs 4:13 – “Take hold of correction and do not let go; keep it, for it is your life.”

Introduction to Proverbs 4:13

The book of Proverbs was written mainly by Solomon, and aims to teach wisdom, instruction and discernment to God’s people. In the midst of so much practical advice for life, we find the verse that blesses us today: “Take hold of correction and do not let it go; keep it, for it is your life.” (Proverbs 4.13).

This verse is part of a strong appeal by the wise Solomon to his children – and symbolically, to all of us – not to abandon God’s Word, especially the principles that come from Him. Divine correction, although not always pleasant at the time, carries within it the very essence of life.

From the beginning, God has always wanted to have communion with man. He created Adam and Eve to live in his presence, in a perfect garden. But when sin entered, this communion was broken. Even so, God didn’t stop speaking. He continues to speak to this day, through His Word and His Holy Spirit, to restore that relationship and show us the way to true salvation.

Development

1.”TAKE YOURSELF TO CORRECTION” – Take hold of God’s Word

Solomon uses intense language here. “Catch you” means to grab, to hold tightly. It’s as if he’s saying: “Don’t let go!”.

This correction is not just a negative rebuke, but loving guidance. God corrects those he loves (Hebrews 12:6). And this correction is the teaching of God’s Word, which shows us where we are going wrong and how to get back on track.

Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth and the life.” (John 14:6). And the Word of God is the map that leads us to that Way.

Correction comes through the word. When we read the Bible, listen to faithful preachers, or receive a specific message from the Holy Spirit, we are receiving the word of God. This word changes our mind, our heart and our direction in life.

2.”DON’T LET HER GO” – Value her and stand by her

Many people have access to the Word of God, but not all of them value it. They start off well, but then get distracted by other things and put the Word to one side.

But God tells us: don’t let go. This is a warning against spiritual superficiality. Many want blessings, miracles and healings, but few want to grow in knowledge and obedience.

The Word of God may seem difficult at times, it may require changes, it may demand renunciations. But that is precisely what makes it precious. We shouldn’t exchange it for anything, because it came with God’s great love for us. And the greatest proof of this love was Jesus Christ, who died for us so that we might have abundant life (John 10:10).

3.”SAVE IT” – Keep it in your heart

The only way not to lose something valuable is to keep it in the safest place. And the only place we have to keep the Word of God is in our hearts.

Jesus said: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6.21). If we keep God’s Word in our hearts, it will influence our thoughts, feelings, decisions and actions.

Keeping the Word is not just memorizing verses, but living by them. It’s allowing the Word to transform who you are on the inside.

4.”FOR SHE IS YOUR LIFE” – The Word is Salvation and the promise of Eternal Life

When Solomon says that correction is life, he means it literally: the Word of God is life. Not just life here on earth, but eternal life.

Jesus said: “The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” (John 6:63). The Word of God feeds the soul, frees the spirit, heals the mind and saves eternity.

Everyone who receives the Word with faith and obedience will inherit eternal life. This is God’s promise to all who believe and abide in His Word.

Conclusion of Proverbs 4:13

Dear brothers and sisters, the Word of God is not just an ancient book, it is the very food of our soul. It frees, teaches, corrects, comforts, strengthens and gives meaning to our lives.

If you want to live a full, meaningful and eternal life, hold on to God’s Word. Don’t let go of it, even in difficult times. Keep it in your heart, and it will be your life.

May we, like David, say with conviction: “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119.11)

And above all, let’s remember that the Word of God became incarnate in Jesus. And in him, we find true Life.

So take hold of the Word of God, and in it find true life. Amen.
