We must value the Lord’s blessing

Preaching Outline on Ecclesiastes 7:11 – “Wisdom is as good as an inheritance, and those who see the sun profit from it.”

Introduction to Ecclesiastes 7:11

The book of Ecclesiastes, written by the wise king Solomon, is a profound reflection on the meaning of life and the search for happiness. In the midst of his reflections on the vanity of earthly things, Solomon highlights the importance of wisdom as a precious asset, comparing it to a valuable inheritance.

In verse 11, Solomon says that wisdom is as good as inheritance, and that those who “see the sun” profit from it. This metaphor of the “sun” points to the light of truth and knowledge, which illuminates the path of those who seek divine wisdom.

In contrast to wisdom, the text leads us to reflect on the condition of the man who lives apart from God, without the light of His Word and the guidance of His Spirit. This man lives in darkness, without direction or purpose, like someone who cannot see the sun.

Through this sermon, we will explore the importance of valuing the blessing of wisdom, seeking it in God and applying it to our lives.

Development

Wisdom as an inheritance

Wisdom is a precious gift that God gives us. It is compared to an inheritance, something of great value that is passed down from generation to generation. Just as a material inheritance can provide security and sustenance, divine wisdom equips us to live a full and meaningful life.

Proverbs 3:13-18 states: “Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who acquires knowledge; for his merchandise is better than silver merchandise, and his profit than fine gold. It is more precious than rubies, and whatever else you may desire cannot be compared to it. Length of days is in her right hand, and on her left are riches and honor. Her ways are paths of delight, and all her paths of peace. It is a tree of life to those who take hold of it, and happy are all those who retain it.”

Wisdom guides us when making decisions, protects us from dangers and leads us along the path of justice and truth. It enables us to discern good from evil, to make wise choices and to live in harmony with God and our neighbors.

Let us seek wisdom in God through prayer, reading the Bible and meditating on his teachings. May divine wisdom be our guide and our most precious treasure.

The fear of the Lord as the beginning of wisdom

The fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom. It is the recognition of God’s sovereignty, His holiness and His power. It is the reverence and respect for God that leads us to seek His will and obey His commandments.

Proverbs 9:10 says: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is prudence.” When we fear the Lord, we turn away from evil and seek to live according to his principles.

The fear of the Lord leads us to humility, obedience and trust in God. It frees us from pride, arrogance and self-sufficiency, which are obstacles to growth in wisdom.

Let us cultivate the fear of the Lord in our hearts, recognizing his greatness and his authority over our lives. May the fear of the Lord be the foundation of our wisdom and the guide of our steps.

The wisdom that comes from above

True wisdom is not the fruit of human intelligence or worldly experience. It is a gift from God, given to those who seek it with sincerity and humility. James 3:17 describes the wisdom that comes from above: “But the wisdom that comes from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, teachable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.”

Divine wisdom manifests itself in a pure, peaceful, merciful and just character. It produces good fruit in our lives, such as love, kindness, peace, patience and self-control.

Let us seek the wisdom that comes from above, opening our hearts to the action of the Holy Spirit. May he guide us and enlighten us, so that we can live in wisdom and reflect the character of Christ in our actions and attitudes.

Living in the sunlight of justice

The metaphor of the “sun” in Ecclesiastes 7:11 points to the light of truth and knowledge, which illuminates the path of those who seek divine wisdom. Jesus Christ is the “Sun of Righteousness” (Malachi 4:2), who came into the world to free us from the darkness of sin and guide us to eternal life.

John 8:12 states: “Then Jesus said to them, ‘I am the light of the world; whoever follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life’.” When we follow Jesus, we are enlightened by His Word and guided by His Spirit.

Let us live in the light of the Sun of Righteousness, seeking to know God and His teachings. May His Word be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). May His light lead us to truth, justice and a full life in His presence.

Conclusion of Ecclesiastes 7:11

Wisdom is a precious blessing that God gives us. It is compared to an inheritance, a treasure of great value that equips us to live a full and meaningful life.

Let us seek wisdom in God, fearing him and seeking his will. May divine wisdom be our guide and our light, leading us along the path of truth, justice and eternal life.

Let us live in the light of the Sun of Righteousness, Jesus Christ, who frees us from darkness and guides us to full life in God. May His Word enlighten our steps and enable us to live in wisdom, producing fruits of justice and peace for the glory of God.
